Reception blog archive 2018-2019

Reception had a brilliant trip to Smithall's open farm. We had a lovely donkey ride and an exciting tractor ride feeding more donkeys on route. We then visited the goats and fed lots of hungry mouths. After lunch we watched the cows being milked, which the children found very interesting and to finish off we got to stroke and hold lots of baby animals. What a fun packed day!

Science Week

We have had a super busy and fascinating Science week. Reception have visited a planetarium, watched an explosive assembly and had workshops were we investigated worms and magnets. We have also been closely observing our caterpillars, snails and a huge moth! 

Pre School Visit

The children from Pre School have enjoyed visiting Reception this week in anticipation of starting in September.

Minibeast Hunt

This week we have been busy hunting for minibeasts in our outdoor areas. We discovered lots of ladybirds, some lovely green beetles, woodlice and worms. The children enjoyed using the magnifers and learnt a lot about minibeasts habitats.

The whole school joined in with Dance from the heart, this year it was a space theme. The children have been practicing hard and did a super job of following the routine. As a special treat there was a hilarious Science performance including a bouncy robot controlled by Mr Law! It was very naughty and made the children giggle!
Reception's Poetry Performance 2019
Reception did two fabulous performances, reciting poems and songs about journeys and transport. The children worked really hard to remember the words and actions perfectly. WELL DONE!

Our Trip To Bring Yer Wellies

The children had a great time at 'Bring Yer Wellies'. We started by digging tunnels in the sand, then went on a walk in the herb garden, before planting up our own herbs. We then discovered how worms made compost. After lunch we went to the stream to race cork boats and then worked as a team to build a shelter. It was a fun packed day and we got to bring home some spearmint and lemon thyme.

Class Dojo Points winners

This half term saw the introduction of our Class Dojo points system in RN. The children have been trying really hard to gain points by behaving well, completing the class challenges and helping others. Well done to all of the children for trying so hard, particularly the top three featured in the photo with their prizes.
Congratulations for Reception for a wonderful show and tell assembly about Creative Arts week. We hope all the parents and family enjoyed it. We also had time to look at the lovely spring homework and show off our Easter bonnets.

Spring chicks

This week we have noticed the chicks are more lively and have grown some feathers. The children loved handling them and are sad to see them go back to the farm, but they will be well looked after by the farmer.

A visit from the mounted police

On Tuesday we had a surprise visit from the local mounted police. The children got the chance to stroke the horses and give them a carrot!

The chicks have arrived in Reception!

On Monday we had a surprise when we found ten eggs in an incubator in our classroom. By Wednesday seven of the chicks had hatched out. The children were lucky enough to see a couple of the chicks hatch out of the eggs. Next week we will be looking at them more closely and the children will have the chance to hold the baby chicks. 

Travelling by tuba

To start Creative Arts week off in style, the whole school were treated to a performance from the Travelling Tuba company. The children loved seeing the different instruments from across the world and some children got the chance to participate. 

Spring Detectives

Now Spring is here we have been out and about in our school grounds looking for signs of Spring. We spotted that the trees had buds coming, some had blossom and the leaves were growing on the hedges. We used our magnifying glasses to have a closer look.

Road Safety

We have been learning how to cross the road safely using our road layout in the playground. The children have been riding the bikes as cars, most had to be reminded to stop at the zebra crossing! 
WORLD BOOK DAY
For World Book day we shared some of our favourite stories and the children took home vouchers to buy books with. 
Spring is here!
Our first day back was very exciting, as part of topic on growth and change we had special visitors. Laura the farmer brought in three pet lambs, the children enjoyed feeding and petting the lambs. We invited nursery over and most of the teachers came for a cuddle! 

Hockey

This week in Reception we have been looking at what sports and leisure activities we do in our free time. Football was a very popular one! The children have had a go at playing hockey, board games and followed a fitness routine which they found took a lot of energy!

Chinese New Year celebrations!

This week in Reception we have been learning all about Chinese New Year. The children have had a go at writing in Chinese, making a Chinese lantern and learning to do a dragon dance. Today we had our own Chinese New Year party. The food was yummy, prawn crackers being the favourite choice! We enjoyed learning to ribbon dance and looked the part in our outfits. 

Snow Fun

Snow Fun In School

The children had lots of fun this week with the snow and ice.

We decided to investigate how we could melt the snow.

We tried with our gloves, with salt and with warm water.

Our prediction, that the water would melt the snow the fastest was correct!!

 

Fun in P.E
Today in PE we have been trying hard to balance quoits and bean bags on different parts of our bodies, whilst moving around the hall. We have been practicing throwing and catching with a partner, using an under arm throw, we may need to practice a little more at home!
Friday was Miss Nisbet's last day in school before she went off on maternity leave. We wished her lots of luck and gave some cards and flowers. She promises to bring the baby in to see us all.

Panto!

Welcome back!

Our new topic this half term is buildings and homes. The children have been working really hard this week, they are making super progress with their reading and writing and have been introduced to a new spelling book. In Maths we are now working with numbers to 10. As a reward for all their hard work, the pantomime 'Cinderella' came into school. It was a big hit with all of the children.

Party Day!

The children enjoyed Christmas party day, lots of brilliant Christmas outfits, tasty party food then fun and games. To finish off the day we had a special visitor, Father Christmas, and we all promised to be good, even Mrs Brownley! So fingers crossed we get some lovely presents.

ICT and New Technologies Week

We played with lots of new toys this week, the remote control cars were a BIG hit! We also liked the robots and the dinosaurs, they roared a lot. We had a go at being photographers, using cameras to take photos of different objects and we used a variety of Apps on the Ipads. 
This half term we have been finding out about Autumn and how things change. We noticed that the leaves change colour and then fall off, fruit is ripe and ready to pick and the weather is getting colder. We went for a walk around our school orchard and picked some of the fruit, we found sloe berries, apples, pears and plums. We tasted some of the fruit and it was juicy and sweet.
