Home Learning – Week Commencing 07.02.22

Reading – Please read one of the books you have been assigned on Rising Stars each day.  The idea is to read a book more than once to build up fluency.  Once you have read a book a couple/few times so you are more fluent, please complete the quiz at the end and move it to the ‘finished’ section.

Please also read key words daily as flashcards (should take 2-3 minutes)

Phonics

• Monday - Recap phase 2/3 phonemes using the Phase 2 and 3 phoneme mats (given out at the beginning of the year, links also below). Recap on the ‘igh’ phoneme by watching Alphablocks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QO8BS-GbHAo Grown ups, write some letters on small bits of paper to spell some ‘igh’ words (e.g. night, right, sigh, bright, tight) but jumble the letters up in each word.  Can children unscramble them to spell the correct ‘igh’ word?
• Tuesday -  Recap phase 2/3 phonemes using the Phase 2 and 3 phoneme mats. Watch Alphablocks following the link to learn about today’s new phoneme ar- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X5qTyupX0IE .  Practise writing words with the ‘ar’ phoneme – car, part, star. Log in to Education City and play Farm Market.
• Wednesday – Follow the link http://www.ictgames.com/phonicsPop/index.html and select the phonemes ‘ai’, ‘ee’, ‘igh’ , ‘oa’ and ‘ar’ and pop the correct balloons.  Have a go at the Roll and Read ‘ar’.
• Thursday – Recap phase 2/3 phonemes using the Phase 2 and 3 phoneme mats.  Then, have a go at the Quick Read ‘igh’ powerpoint (link below) – can you spot all the nonsense (alien) words?  Practise writing this week’s ‘igh’ spellings: sigh and night.
• Friday- Login to Education City and play Stig’s Tree Adventure to practise tricky words.  Complete your spelling test with this week’s words – sigh, night, car, part, to.  How many did you manage to get right? 

English

This week, we will be looking homes and houses, using our phonics to read, and writing labels.

• Monday – Listen to the story Robin’s Winter Song by clicking on the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udLhEMWTP-g  and talk about what happened.  Talk about the word ‘hibernate’ and what it might mean.  Answer the following questions:
  • • What did Robin think of winter at the beginning?
    • Did this change at the end?  What did he think of winter at the end?
    • What did Robin see when he stepped out of Bear’s cave?
    • How did Robin know it was soon time for spring?  What happened? 
• Tuesday – Practise spellings (sigh, night, car, part, to). Watch a little of the following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIaL-dl7YyM and talk about what you can see (snow, frost, bare trees), hear (wind howling, snow falling), what you might feel if you were there (freezing, shivery, cold). Try and write some of these words down using the sheet below:

• Wednesday – Practise spellings.  Have a go at writing a sentence about winter matching just one of the pictures in the Winter Writing link below.  Don’t forget your capital, finger spaces and full stop at the end.  Try and spell words independently if you can.  For example: You can build a snowman in winter.
• Thursday – Practise spellings. Finish off winter writing from yesterday.
• Friday – Spelling test – how many did you get right? Practise your listening skills by logging on to Education City and playing the game The Greatest Snowman.

Topic

• Monday – Go on a winter walk and see what you can see.  Take some pictures of wintery things, like bare trees and any wildlife you find.  Take the Winter nature trail (sheet 4) and tick off the things that you find.
• Tuesday – Create a winter collage with anything silver, blue or white you can find at home.  Maybe you have bits of craft material, shiny paper, tin foil, glitter.  Can you create a wintery collage?  See the images below for ideas.
• Wednesday – Today, see if you can investigate how ice melts.  Take some ice cubes out of the freezer.  How do they feel?  What do you think might happen to them over time?  Can you think of different places in your house that might be different temperatures where you might put your ice cubes?  Put 3 different containers of ice in 3 different places (make sure you use the same amount of ice in each container) and predict which you think will melt first and why.  Were you right?
• Thursday – Complete the hot and cold sorting activity below.
• Friday – Click on the link https://cosmickids.com/video/frozen-a-cosmic-kids-yoga-adventure/ and complete the Cosmic Kids Yoga session based on Frozen.  Alternatively, go for a long walk or bike ride with a family member.
