Home Learning – Week Commencing 21.02.22

Reading – Please read one of the books you have been assigned on Rising Stars each day.  The idea is to read a book more than once to build up fluency.  Once you have read a book a couple/few times so you are more fluent, please complete the quiz at the end and move it to the ‘finished’ section.

English

This week, our English work will be based around the story of The Hungry Caterpillar.

  • Monday – Watch the animated version of the book – following the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY.  Can you remember what he ate on different days? Why do you think he ate so much? Why do you think the Hungry Caterpillar felt sick? What happened on the last days?  Choose your favourite fruit and have go at drawing it. Think of some good describing words for your chosen fruit and write them around your drawing.
  • Tuesday – Watch the animated version of the book – following the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75NQK-Sm1YY again, to remind yourself of what happened.  Then, have a go at retelling the story using the story map (picture below).  Finally, see if you can put the pictures of the story in order.  You can either do this by printing out the pictures or, if you would prefer not to print it out, you can re-order them on the powerpoint below instead.
  • Wednesday – Complete the sentences by filling in the correct missing word.
  • Thursday – Follow Mrs Parker’s video for an explanation of today’s writing task https://youtu.be/H5Eshd3R0eo.  Don’t forget to send us your sentences on Tapestry!
  • Friday – Follow the links to listen to other similar books by Eric Carle, the author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Talk about which you prefer and why.

Maths

Topic

  • Monday – We are beginning our growth and change topic this term.  We will start by looking at the life cycle of a butterfly because of our Hungry Caterpillar theme this week.  Watch Mrs Parker lead the book about a butterfly’s life cycle: https://youtu.be/aXhlRV31ywU. Then, watch a short video of this life cycle in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVm5k99PnBk After that, have a go at cutting and sticking the pictures in the correct order to show the butterfly life cycle.  Could you add labels?
  • Tuesday Have a go at drawing your own Very Hungry Caterpillar. You can draw it by hand or have a go on Minimash  – see Mrs Parker complete one first: https://youtu.be/vpyMYU4fOWA
  • Wednesday – This term in PSHE, we are looking at our responsibilities and being good citizens through the theme of being helpful.  To begin with, watch Mrs Parker’s video to introduce this session: https://youtu.be/5-QsWv6NDeU Afterwards, decide on two things that you could do to help your family in the week and try to ensure you do these.  You can use the household chores link below to discuss some ideas if you wish.  Possible ideas:  putting toys away, setting the table for tea, pairing up the socks after they’ve been washed, feeding the pets, doing reading / homework without being asked/cajoled, playing with a younger sibling, making their bed etc.
  • Thursday – PE day! Complete the Very Hungry Caterpillar Cosmic Kids Yoga session following the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhWDiQRrC1Y Then, we would like you to go on a long walk or bike ride around your local area, trying to spot any signs of spring.  There could be a few buds peeping through – can you see them?
  • Friday – Screen free Friday – we are going to try and ensure our Friday afternoon activities are ones away from the screen and a bit of a ‘wind down’ before our weekend.  So, for today, follow the recipe (or adapt if you wish) to make a healthy fruit smoothie that the Hungry Caterpillar might like, and you too!  How did it taste? If you don’t have a blender to make one, perhaps you could join in making a healthy sandwich for him instead.  Finally, we would like you to choose your favourite board game and play it with someone in your household, as a fun, end of week activity to finish off with.  Have a lovely weekend.
