The Lancashire Equality Mark is awarded to schools who have taken measures to embed Equality throughout their practice with the goal of enabling all pupils to thrive in a supportive learning community. It has been developed by a working group in Lancashire and provides a clear framework to guide schools through the process of auditing, developing and consolidating good practice in different areas of Equality.
The Equality Mark is comprised of six individual Equality Badges:
The faith ambassadors interviewed Benjamin in Year 5 to discuss his working disability with his hearing. Benjamin has cochlear implants and is profoundly deaf without them.
These are the questions and Benjamin’s answers to our interview:
1. How do you communicate in class?
Normally by talking, but I use a radio for me to hear the teacher.
2. Does it affect your learning?
When the radio is off and its noisy it can be hard to learn.
3. Which do you prefer BSL or lip reading?
I don’t do BSL I sometimes use lip reading but I use my radio mostly.
4. Does your disability make you feel special in anyway?
Sometimes being deaf can make me feel special but mostly I don’t think about it.
5. How does it affect you in general?
I struggle in hard work or if my radio isn’t turned on.
6. How does it impact school swimming?
I have a water-resistant pair of protection for my hearing aids.
