Happy Holidays!

Our final week in Year 5 has been great fun.

One of the highlights was a wonderful concert led by Mr Thomas, where our talented keyboard players performed brilliantly for us - please see some pictures of this below. We also enjoyed our last PNE Computing workshop, played rounders outside in the sunshine, completed our Record of Achievement reflections, and rounded off our learning about the Ancient Mayans in History and Sikhism in RE.

We are so proud of everything the children have achieved and the enthusiasm, kindness, and hard work they have shown throughout the year. Thank you to all our families for your continued support, and a special thank you for the lovely gifts and kind messages for the staff—they were incredibly thoughtful and very much appreciated.

We wish everyone a happy, safe, and relaxing summer break. Have a fantastic summer!

Year 5 Team

English

This week in English, we have been exploring Macbeth by William Shakespeare. We focused on Act 1, Scene 1, where we were introduced to the three mysterious witches and the powerful opening of the play.

To begin, we carefully annotated the original scene, exploring the language Shakespeare used, discussing the meanings behind key phrases, and unpicking the origins of unfamiliar words. We then wrote our own playscript scenes with similar themes.

Maths

This week in Maths we have been looking at converting units across mass, length, capacity and time. We converted imperial units to metric; the children looked at grams to kilograms; kilometres to meters to centimetres to millimetres; we looked at litres and millilitres. Finally, we compared time across seconds, minutes, days, weeks, months and years.

History

In History we have looked at the hierarchy of the ancient Mayan civilization. We discussed the different social classes and looked at Mayan leaders. We then compared this to the Anglo-Saxons of the UK and how similar/ dissimilar the ruling structure was. We learnt that the Mayan leaders had nobles and priests to support them. We were also able to establish a hierarchical order from slaves and farmers to merchants and artisans, all the way up to the rulers of the kingdoms. 

UCLan visit

This half term we have had the pleasure of visiting the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) to take part in Computing workshops.

The sessions gave us the opportunity to explore the world of robotics and programming through fun, hands-on activities. Everyone learnt how to code robots to complete a range of challenges, developing problem-solving, logical thinking, and teamwork skills along the way.

English

This week we have been writing some poetry in the style of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. We have written our poems using rhyming couplets and thought of as many mysterious animal parts that we could add to our bubbling cauldrons.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been looking at converting kilograms into grams and converting kilometers into metres.  The children used their knowledge of place value (decimals and multiplying/dividing by 1000) to calculate the conversions.

Science

In Science this week we looked at the gestation periods of different mammals, and we plotted this data into a line graph; we then used the line graph to spot patterns (the larger the mass of the mammal, the longer the gestation period). We also found the anomaly within the data set.  

Sampler Day

The Year 6 staff were all thrilled to meet our wonderful Year 5 children. Everybody had a great first day in their new classrooms and everybody made such a good first impression. It’s amazing how quickly this year has flown by – Well done everyone!

Weekly Update 26.6.26

This week in Year 5, we have had a fantastic time with lots of exciting learning across the curriculum!

In English, we have started a new unit based on the book Rain Player by David Wisniewski. The story is set in the time of the ancient Maya, which links perfectly with our History topic this term. We have been exploring the characters and setting, and learning about the importance of the Pok-a-Tok ball game in Maya culture. 

In Maths, we have been working hard to improve our arithmetic skills in preparation for assessment week next week. We have been practising our times tables, column addition and subtraction, and methods for multiplication and division. We are trying our best to show our workings clearly and check our answers carefully. 

In RE, we took part in a special workshop all about Buddhism. We learned about the life of the Buddha and some of the key beliefs in Buddhism, including kindness and mindfulness. We enjoyed taking part in discussions and activities that helped us understand how Buddhists practise their faith. In PE, we have been developing our skills in rounders. We practised our throwing, catching and batting, and worked on our teamwork during matches. It has been great fun and a wonderful way to stay active. In Art, we have been investigating ancient Mayan masks. We looked at different designs, patterns and symbols, and discussed what they might have represented. 

On Friday, we had an amazing time taking part in the Skip 2 B Fit event. We really enjoyed challenging ourselves and showing our fantastic skipping skills. A huge thank you to Mr Law and Mr Jardine for organising such a fun and energetic event for us – we had a brilliant time!

Weekly Update: Monday 24^th – Friday 28^th November

English

This week we have been looking closely at the dialogue used within ‘A Christmas Carol’ and we have explored some of the features and language used by Scrooge, his nephew, and Bob Cratchit. The children have re-written some of these speech parts and put them into their own words. We have also been looking at the setting of Scrooge’s office space and explored different expanded-noun phrases to describe this setting.

Maths

In Maths this week we have been looking at equivalent fractions. The concept of fractions can be quite tricky, and the children have been understanding that a fraction is a part of a whole, and that ‘wholes’ can be broken up into different parts (fractions). We have been looking specifically at equivalent fractions and how ½ can also be represented as 3/6 etc. The children have used their understanding of common multiples/ multiplication facts to generate equivalent fractions of their own.

PE

In PE this week, the children have been looking at different ways to pass the basketball. We have spent time learning to dribble the ball effectively and now we have added passing, as another way to bypass an opponent and head towards the basket. We have looked at the chest-pass and also the bounce pass and we talked about the different options and when we would use these in a game scenario.

Weekly Update: Monday 17^th – Friday 21^st November

English

We have continued to read ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens and we have been looking closely at the character Scrooge. Exploring the text, we have been picking out descriptive language to better describe him; we have looked at the clothes that he wears, the way he acts and the way in which he speaks to others. We have also made predictions, having read only the first chapter and a half, as to what may have happened to Scrooge in his past and what may happen next in the story.

Maths

This week we have been completing some end of unit assessments across place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. The children have all worked hard and performed well. Next week, we will revisit a couple of topics before starting Fractions, which will run across several weeks.

Topic

This week in RE we have been looking at some of the different religions that make up our society. We talked about acknowledging different faiths and how people can live in the same country and still celebrate different religious occasions. This then led our learning to look at the Nativity Story, within Christianity, as we are now leading towards Christmas.

Weekly Update: Monday 10^th – Friday 14^th November

English

This week in English, we have started to look ‘A Christmas Carol’ by Charles Dickens. The children have been exposed to some of the opening text, they have seen different images of varying settings within the text, and they have also watched a couple of different clips from differing movie adaptations of the text. They have been building a bank of adjectives, similes, expanded noun-phrases and historical facts to help them with their ‘Star Write’ on Monday, which will be an independent write up of a setting description.

Maths

In Maths this week, we have been looking at square numbers, Cube numbers, Prime numbers and have explored the relationship between common multiples and factors. We have revisited our times tables, and the children have been making links between the multiples and their factors. We have used arrays to explore square numbers, and we consolidated our learning of cubed numbers, by using cubes to show this.

Topic - Computing

In Computing this week, the children have been focusing on ‘Filming Techniques’. Using the iPads, the children loved filming each other and enjoyed learning about how digital cameras have evolved over time. The children used the following different filming techniques:

• High, low or normal

Weekly Update: Monday 3^rd – Friday 11^th November 7

English

This week in English we have continued our work on Katherine Johnson, the pioneering black, female mathematician, who challenged racial boundaries and prejudice, to become a trailblazer at NASA. We learnt about Katherine, read her biography, understood her life and we have explored ‘biographies’ and how they are written and presented. The children will use these skills that they have looked at this week to compose their own star write on Monday.

Maths

In Maths we have been looking at division and multiplication in terms of factors, common factors and multiples. The children will be using these number skills and number fluency, as we move into work on fractions and ratios in coming weeks. The children have been practicing their times tables again and we have enjoyed some mental maths quizzes and races too.

Swimming

The children have been practicing their ‘Survival Skills’, in the water this week and practiced floating in the water, whilst wearing their clothes. The children really enjoyed ‘falling into the water’ and then trying to stay afloat for a given amount of time. We will be continuing our ‘Survival Skills’ for the coming weeks so please can you ensure that your child continues to bring a t-shirt and shorts to wear in the water.

Weekly Update: Monday 13^th – Friday 17^th October

English

This week we have been practicing for our Harvest Assembly, and we have been working on our oratory and drama skills. The children have practiced reading their poems, learned their lines or honed their acting skills. We are very excited to perform in front of the whole school and parents next Friday. In addition to practicing for our performance, we have also looked at the biography of Katherine Johnson, and we will be exploring the features of a biography over the next week or so.

Maths

This week, we have continued to work on our addition and subtraction problems. We have added additional parts, and the children are now navigating through 2 and 3-part word problems. The questions have been intentionally tricky and worded in such a manner that the children needed to really concentrate on what procedure they need to do (is it asking them to add, or to take away); the children have really enjoyed working through these real-life word problems/challenges.

Topic – Computing

In Computing we have been looking at ‘search engines’; we discussed how these are used, and we explored different ones: Google, Bing and Yahoo, being some. We carried out some research of our own and compared the different web pages, their usability and the results that appeared from our searches.

Learning for Life

Life Skills Week this week has been an inspiring and exciting time. We have really enjoyed our workshops and sessions including exploring nature in the forest school, learning about what to do in an emergency in our First Aid workshop, a talk from the local Police, a HSBC ‘Money Matters’ session and a mental health workshop. We would like to say a big thank you to Mr Law and all of the session teachers for such a wonderful week.

Weekly Update: Monday 29^th – Friday 3^rd October

Maths

This week in Maths we have been focussing specifically on subtraction. We have revisited column subtraction, and we discussed what mistakes can occur during procedures. As the week progressed, we then began to unpick some word problems, as to apply our subtraction skills. Example:

Emma read 304 pages of her book. After reading, she returned 64 pages to the library and then borrowed 39 more pages. How many pages does she have now?

English

In English we have explored a new story, ‘Stone Soup’, which will play a pivotal role in our Harvest Festival performance that will be happening in a few weeks’ time. We discussed the moral of the story and then discussed harvest and made the links between the story and the meaning of harvest. The children unpicked the story and began to retell it using their own vocabulary, with the intention of including a wider array of expanded noun phrases.

Topic – Science

This week in science we were joined by Mrs. Webb who came to watch our experiments on Tuesday afternoon. The children have been looking at different states of matter; this week we were focussing on ‘solutions’. Each table had a different solid to mix (sand, sugar, flour and tea bags) and we explored what happened to each when we added water and stirred. We then observed our results and recorded these in a table. Not all made a ‘solution’ and we explained what constitutes a solution.

Weekly Update: Monday 22^nd – Friday 26^th September

English

This week in English we have been focussing on using fronted adverbials; we have used fronted adverbials of manner, place and time. We have read the chapter Diagon Alley, within Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone’, and we used this to draw out key vocabulary that we could introduce into our own ‘Star Writes’. As a class, we also looked at the spoken dialogue between Harry and Mr Ollivander, as he set about choosing his wand.

Maths

In Maths we have been continuing our work on Place Value; specifically looking at partitioning numbers, to 1,000,000, and how this can help us to solve missing number equations. Throughout the week, we have also been exploring some word problems and working through these systematically. The children have also spent some time working on some more challenging subtraction equations and how we should present these.

Topic – PSHE

In PSHE this week, we have been discussing ‘friendship’ and we presented the children with a set of different scenarios. The children worked with their table partners to devise a short role play, which they then acted out to the rest of the class. Examples of the different scenarios included: ‘worry about a test’, ‘not being invited to a party’, ‘nervous about speaking in an assembly’ and ‘getting angry with a teacher for being blamed for something they hadn’t done’.

Weekly Update: Monday 15 - Friday 19th September 

English 

In English, we have continued to read Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone and build our writing around the novel. We have read the chapter 'Diagon Alley' and used this to write a setting description; we have also used the meeting of Harry and Mr Ollivander to further our understanding of direct speech and how to correctly punctuate this within our writing. 

Maths 

In Maths, we have been using Gattegno Charts to further our understanding of Place Value, specifically multiplying by 10 and 100; we also used the charts to repeat the inverse procedure, dividing by 10 and 100. The charts show the children clearly the shift from tens to ones etc. and dispelling the misconception that we simply 'add or take off a zero' when multiplying and dividing by 10/100 etc. 

Topic 

In ICT we have been looking at systems; we looked at 'drop off lockers' and discussed how these computerised units worked. We discussed what a system is, using a push bike as our first example, and then explored how some systems are digital. We also explained about systems having inputs, processes and outputs; a washing machine was also used as an example of this. 

Weekly Update: Monday 8th - Friday 12th September

English 

This week, we have been continuing with our class novel 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' by JK Rowling. The children are really getting into the text and have produced some excellent writing; focussing on including direct speech within their writing and punctuating this correctly. 

Maths

We have been looking at Place Value this week and have extended to working within 1,000,000. We have done so by partitioning numbers into thousand, hundreds, tens, ones etc. and as the week progressed, we started to apply this to some challenging two/three-part problems. We have also looked at division within our fluency sessions. 

Topic 

In Geography, we have been using our map reading skills to locate different countries within North America. Using a Atlas, we have also looked at different map types and tried to identify different features on the map (rivers, mountains, etc.). Last week we looked at our region, the North West, and in coming weeks, we will compare this to other parts of North America.

Swimming

We all enjoyed our first swimming session on Thursday. Thank you for ensuring that all the children were fully equipped with shorts, costumes, towels, hats etc. Despite the obvious anxieties beforehand, the children all enjoyed it and it will be great watching their progress over the coming weeks.  

Friday, 5th September 

We've had a great first week back in Year 5 and all the children have settled in very well to their new classrooms.

Our first English topic this year is based on the novel 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone,' We have read the first two chapters and got to know the different characters. In Maths we have been focussing on Place Value and Number skills. In the next few weeks we will be using our times tables recall to further develop our Fluency skills. In Science we reviewed our previous topic, 'Living Things,' and identified examples of vertebrates, invertebrates and exo-skeletons.

In Geography we have identified key human and physical features of the North West region, and used atlases to locate a range of places in Lancashire. We have created Radial Art sketches in Art, making sure each of the four sections in the circles were symmetrical. It was also great to meet our swimming teacher this week and find out what our lessons will be like and what kit we need to bring ready for our first session next Thursday.

For Outdoor Learning Day year 5 went outside as part of their PSHE lesson on listening skills to concentrate on all the things they could hear around them. 

Black History Month

As part of Black History Month Year 5 have looked at the life of Harriet Tubman.  We have researched about her life and written a biography about her.

Life Skills Week

During Life Skills Week year 5 have taken part in a variety of workshops and assemblies such as; Dog Safety, NSPCC and Mental Health.  We have also been busy designing our bonfire safety posters explaining how to keep safe on Bonfire Night.
