Year 5 Swimming – Autumn Term 2026

Year 5 pupils will take part in swimming lessons for the final time this academic year, building on the provision offered in Year 4.

Lessons will begin on Wednesday 9th September and continue throughout the autumn term (up to Christmas) at Leyland Leisure Centre.   One class will swim at 1pm and the other at 1.45pm.   As pupils will leave school earlier, they will have an earlier lunch break.

Children will travel by coach and will be accompanied by school staff.

Pupils will work towards the three-core National Curriculum swimming requirements:

  • Swimming at least 25 metres competently and unaided;
  • Using a range of strokes effectively; and
  • Performing safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Parents and carers will be informed of their child’s progress at the end of the autumn terms. Pupils who have not achieved all three requirements will be offered catch-up sessions during the summer term.

Children will need a swimming bag, towel, one-piece costume or swimming trunks, and a swimming hat. Bikinis and tankinis are not permitted.

Swimming hats can be purchased through the online payment system.
