WC 10.01.22

Home Learning – Week Commencing 10.01.22

Reading – Please read one of the books you have been assigned on Rising Stars each day.  The idea is to read a book more than once to build up fluency.  Once you have read a book a couple/few times so you are more fluent, please complete the quiz at the end and move it to the ‘finished’ section.

English

Talk about vocabulary you heard in the story (e.g. churn) that you might not have heard before and discuss what they mean.

  • Wednesday – Retell the story with the story map and actions – can you remember any of it without watching the video today?  Don’t worry if you can’t, you can use the video and tell the story along with Mrs Parker.  Think about the big bad wolf – what words can you think of to describe him?  Use the sheet below and write some of these words around the wolf, then colour him in.  Try and think of the sounds in the words independently if you can, but you can ask for some help from a grown up if you need to.
  • Thursday – Today, you are going to choose one of the writing sheets below (1, 2 or 3) to write a sentence to match the picture.  Don’t forget to think of your sentence first, see if you can repeat it so you can remember it, before trying to write it.  Don’t forget your capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between your words and a full stop (or exclamation mark) at the end.  Try to hear the sounds in the words you are writing to spell them independently if you can, with only a little help from a grown up.
  • Friday – It is your last day to retell the story with the actions and storymap today!  Can you take a video and upload to Tapestry?

Maths

Each day children will be provided activities from White Rose Maths. This will include a video clip to watch and sometimes a Powerpoint. There will then be a task to complete and a extension activity as a challenge.

Topic

This week we will be looking at the Arctic.

  • Monday - Children watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUyNZGa9LLM and compare an igloo to their home. What do their homes have that igloos don’t? Windows, doors etc. Ensure children understand that igloos are not built much anymore and that houses are made from other materials like wood and metal.
  • Tuesday - Talk about the igloos from the video yesterday.  What are the igloos made of?  Ice, snow.  Why have we never really built igloos in this country?  Draw out the fact that the ice would melt and that it is cold in the Arctic/Antarctic so the ice and snow stays frozen.  Put some ice cubes in 3 different containers.  Talk about what would happen to the ice eventually.  Can children think of 3 different places in the house that are different temperatures where they could put the containers and predict which would melt first?  Don’t forget to keep checking on them!
  • Wednesday – Using sugar cubes, marshmallows or ice cubes (a little trickier), see if you can build an igloo shape (you may need to use something different for the roof, like a small sheet of paper).
  • Thursday – Watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-9xDztBhzE and talk about the animals you have seen that live in the Arctic.
