Home Learning – Week Commencing 17.01.22

Reading – Please read one of the books you have been assigned on Rising Stars each day.  The idea is to read a book more than once to build up fluency.  Once you have read a book a couple/few times so you are more fluent, please complete the quiz at the end and move it to the ‘finished’ section.

Please also read key words daily as flashcards (should take 2-3 minutes)

English

This week, we will be looking at animals that live in cold places (the Arctic/Antarctic) and by the end of the week, writing a factual sentence about either a penguin or a polar bear.

  • Monday – Click on the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTQ3Ko9ZKg8 and watch to around 5 minutes.  This clip is from the BBC’s Frozen Planet and is narrated by David Attenborough so the language may be a little advanced for our age group, though it is a nice introduction to the week.  After watching, discuss together what you have seen, the idea of North and South poles and where these are on our planet/globe and which is the Arctic and which is the Antarctic.  Talk about the animals seen in the video and how they manage to live in such cold conditions.  Alternatively, I will discuss some of these things on the following video clip: https://youtu.be/Zp1y1xsmsd8. Then, think of words to describe either a penguin or a polar bear (e.g. strong, fierce, huge paws, white fur, powerful) and have a go at writing these words on your whiteboard. An adult can help you with some of the spelling.
  • Tuesday – Learn the song/poem I’m a Little Penguin (to the tune of I’m a Little Teapot) and make up your own actions to help you remember it.  Can you sing/say it off by heart with your actions?
  • Wednesday – Learn the poem Little Polar Bear (not so little actually!) and make up actions to help you remember it.  Challenge - Can you change any of the words in the poem to make it your own?  Or even make a similar one up about a different animal that lives in the cold?  This is a challenge and you can choose whether to do it or not.
  • Thursday – Your task today (and to finish off tomorrow if you wish) is to compose a sentence about either a polar bear or a penguin and write it in your neatest, pre-cursive handwriting.  You can use this clip to help you: https://youtu.be/_glCbG4jCPY. Discuss with an adult what you could write and see if you can say your sentence a few times to remember it before you write it (e.g. A penguin is black and white.  OR A polar bear is big and strong with white fur.)  Don’t forget to use a capital letter at the beginning, finger spaces between your words and a full stop at the end.  Try and hear the sounds in the words to help you spell them as independently as possible.  Words don’t need to be spelt correctly at this age as long as it is decipherable what children have written – they can spell words as they sound.  Words can be scribed by an adult and copy written by the child but only when children aren’t yet able to sound words out themselves and spell independently.  We are really trying to build up independence in writing.
  • Friday – Complete the Join It, Say It, Write It sheet (link below) then write these words out in your best handwriting, using pre-cursive.

Maths

Extension- Can you make 6 in different ways too?

then have a go at the task:

Topic

  • MondayHave a look at the powerpoint Introduction to Habitats (link below) and make sure you know what a habitat is.  Look at the 3 different habitats on the powerpoint and talk about what it might be like for an animal to live there.  How are these habitats different from each other?  Can you think of any animals that might live in the different habitats?  Finally, watch the short video about the Arctic habitat and animals that live there - https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=b-9xDztBhzE
  • Tuesday – Watch the short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VBJyLfOyNsM which is a brief introduction to underwater habitats like the ocean.  What kind of animals did you see that live in this habitat?  What is special about them so that they can live underwater?  Use your creative skills to colour or make your own sea creature that lives underwater.
  • WednesdayOur third habitat this week is the desert.  Watch this short video https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=3XF42x_72Xs Then login to Education City and complete the activity Creatures of Habitat.  Note – this activity looks at different habitats than just the 3 we have looked at this week, so will require a grown up to sit alongside to discuss the questions as they come up.
  • Thursday – Sort the animals into whether they live in a cold habitat or hot habitat (link below)
