Phonics Phase 2 and 3

Children learn to read in the early years by learning the sounds made by letters of the alphabet and how they fit together to form words.  They will take part in a phonics lesson every day alongside a reading session 2-3 times a week where they will learn to apply the learning from their phonics sessions.  The link below explains a little bit about how we teach reading in the early years and how you can support your child at home:

The further links below are designed to help our families to support their children in learning phonics by demonstrating how we pronounce the phonemes we will learn during the Reception year - Phase 2 and Phase 3 phonemes.  By the end of the Reception year, we aim for all our children to be confident with these phonemes.  

The first link below takes you to an interactive webpage where you can click on each of the Phase 2 and 3 graphemes to hear the phoneme.  The only one we might say differently is the 'u' phoneme because this can change according to accent/dialect.

When you are confident with each of the phonemes, you can download and print the phoneme mats below to practise regularly with your child.
