Monday 22nd February - English – Introduction to discussion writing
This half term we will be starting to learn about discussion texts in English. A discussion text is a text that presents both sides of an issue or argument.

Activity – Have a go at completing the task below about different discussion text topics. Can you think of any topics of your own that you could write a discussion text about. Try to think of at least 5 ideas.
Tuesday 23rd February – English – Discussion Texts
Today we will be continuing to learn about balanced discussion texts.
Please watch the video clip about people climbing Mount Snowdon, which is the highest mountain in Wales. The video focusses on writing for and against arguments in discussion texts - see link below.
Activity – Now re watch the video and have a go at making some notes about the reasons for and against people being allowed to climb Mount Snowdon.
Try dividing your page into two sections - for and against. Now use bullet points to organise your notes and ideas. Try to think of at least three arguments for and three arguments against from the video or your own ideas.
Wednesday 24th February - English - Discussion Texts
Today we will be continuing to least about writing for and against arguments about a particular topic.

Thursday 25th February - Discussion Texts.
Today we will be looking at language of debate. These are words and phrases which are used in discussion texts. For example, to show the opposite point of view you could use one of the following phrases: However… , Although... On the other hand… On the contrary… In contrast…
Activity - please have a go at using language of debate to join the given statements - see activity below.
Extension - can you write some statements about a particular topic which include some language of debate phrases to join the statements. For example:
Many tourists enjoy climbing mount Snowden. However, people dropping litter on the mountain is an ongoing problem.
Friday 26th February – English - Discussion Texts.

In this activity, you will be reading a selection of texts and choosing the arguments which support the view for either for or against.
